John Armstrong was a soldier, merchant, and land speculator. A soldier from 1776 to 1793, he was commandant at Forts Pitt and Hamilton, and participated in the campaigns of Harmar and St. Clair. After retiring from the army, Armstrong ran a general store near Cincinnati and speculated in land.
